Slippery Slopes explores my generation’s relationship to tattoos. Some may wonder why someone has the desire or feel the need to mark their body with designs permanently. Over thousands of years ago and throughout history, tattoos were a sign of belonging to a particular culture or a group of people. In the last fifty years, it has gained popularity and has now become a form of individual expression. Within my generation, there is a desire to emancipate ourselves from others and to have ownership of our bodies whilst being part of the same generation. I believe they are a reflection of who we are or who we were. Tattoos are private yet their display is public. The more you read into someone, the more you understand their tattoos. Tattoos are how people project themselves to the outside world. They are symbolic of one’s identity.
